DENVER, Colo. -

Ft. Carson Sgt. Anthony Silva had just gone on leave from the Army and was weeks away from being honorably discharged due to an injury. Denver Police still don't know who shot and killed him Saturday.

"He had his whole life ahead of him and it was stolen from him and from us that night," said Silva's dad, Dave Silva. "He was a wonderful boy, a wonderful man."

Anthony, 25, was staying at a Denver motel and waiting for his dad to drive from Illinois and take him home. Police said Silva was last seen walking his dog early Saturday morning near the the Motel 6 on the 3800 block of Paris Street. They said Silva was shot multiple times.

Silva's family said they didn't know why anyone would want to hurt him.

"It's horrible," said Anthony's mom, Diane Silva. "Whoever did this needs to pay."

At a news conference Tuesday, his family told our sister station KMGH that it was ironic that a soldier who spent five years overseas, first in Korea and then Afghanistan, returned safely from battle and then died in gunfire.

"I mean, he was about to come home you know?" said Anthony's younger brother, Joe Silva. "He's been gone for the last five years and this was going to be our bonding time finally."

Silva's body will be flown back to Columbia, Ill. on Thursday. People in the small town have draped American flags on Main Street for Silva's homecoming.

"Everybody back home, they're all praying right now for us," said Diane.

The Silva family is offering $2,000 for any tip that leads to an arrest in Anthony's death. If you have any information call Denver Crimestoppers at 720-913-STOP. KMGH reports that the Silvas hope to increase the reward to find his killer
