Baby BMW gets complete makeover

The public got its first look at the new BMW 2-Series Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Under BMW's new naming convention, all even-numbered cars are coupes -- okay, there's the 6-Series Gran Coupe which has four doors, but BMW still considers it coupe-styled.
The new 2-Series replaces the 1-Series coupes. On the outside, the 2 is slightly lower but also a little longer and wider than the 1, which helps the 2 to appear not as upright as the 1-Series. The lower headlights also help give the car a wider appearance.
There are two engine choices. The standard 228i will come with a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
For even more spirited driving, there's a three-liter inline six-cylinder engine in the performance-oriented M235i. That engine is also turbocharged and cranks out 322 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.
Inside, the cockpit is centered around the driver, though front- and rear-seat passengers will enjoy a little more headroom than the outgoing model. Audio, Bluetooth connection and other entertainment functions are controlled with BMW's iDrive controller and displayed on an 8-inch screen.
Prices for the little BMW start at about $33,000 for the 228i and $44,000 for the M235i.
