An animal shelter in danger of shutting down got some Black Friday help from a Monument restaurant.

An animal shelter in danger of shutting down got some help from a Monument restaurant and some hungry Black Friday shoppers.

Texas Roadhouse donated ten percent of its dinner sales to the Black Forest Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill shelter that took in dozens of creatures during the Waldo Canyon Fire and is struggling financially.

"I was an evacuee of the Waldo Canyon Fire myself," said Cynthia Walker, the marketer for Texas Roadhouse in Monument. "Anything we can do to help out an organization that helps others is something that we're all about."

Diners got to meet some of the animals they were helping feed: a horse named Lady and two dogs joined animal sanctuary volunteers outside the restaurant.

The sanctuary cares for a wide variety of creatures including sheep, donkeys, pigs and a turkey. Many animals that come to the shelter are abandoned, malnourished or hurt.  Volunteers said a spike in the price of hay has made keeping all the mouths fed especially hard.

"We're just trying to maintain feed for everybody and keep everything going," said Shannon Cox, a volunteer at the sanctuary. "Plus all the electric and everything else. Especially now with winter coming because we're going to have heaters out."

Cox and other volunteers said they appreciate the community's generosity as well as help from local businesses. The Monument Pet Smart let volunteers hand out fliers for the Texas Roadhouse fundraiser for several hours Friday.

"We're ecstatic," said Cox. "People think a little donation is nothing, $5 here, $10 there. It all adds up in the long run."
