Body found in Fountain

Fountain Police spent much of Friday night trying to recover a body found in a tributary of Fountain Creek, and searching for evidence in the surrounding area.
The body was in a canal that connects to Fountain Creek, behind the Riverside Mobile Home Park where Crest Road becomes Bandley Drive. Police said the body was clothed and face down in about three feet of water, with the back covered in ice. The age, gender and race of the body are unclear.
Kevin Sims, a mobile home resident, first saw the body and notified police.
"I was after my dog," he said. "I thought I saw a body. I just saw a head and something floating in the water. It was so surreal that I wanted to get my brother to double-check it. I'm still shaken up about it."
Police couldn't recover the body until The Colorado Bureau of Investigation searched the scene for evidence. The Fountain Fire Department provided lighting for the dark area, which is only a few hundred feet from Interstate 25.
Police said no one has been reported missing in Fountain, but the body was found near an unoccupied homeless camp and there was evidence that someone had recently camped under the highway.
"But we can't tie that to the body at all, at this point," said Deputy Chief Bill Elder.
Sims said he hadn't seen homeless people in the area.
"We had rain the other day," he said. "Maybe the body floated down from somewhere else."
The El Paso County Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy once the body is recovered, to determine the cause and manner of death. Police will try to identify the body.
