CSU-Pueblo has been honored for helping the military.
According to a news release from Colorado State University in Pueblo, the university is the only four-year school in Colorado to earn a national ranking for its commitment to helping military veterans further their education by Military Times EDGE magazine.
CSU-Pueblo ranked among the nation's top 68 four-year colleges and universities listed in its upcoming "Best for Vets: Colleges" issue. CSU-Pueblo tied with Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb. for 58th out of 68 four-year colleges recognized.
Representatives from more than 650 schools responded to this year's survey to submit information on their programs, policies, and resources for veterans. Among them were some 140 schools that identified themselves as career and technical institutions, from which a separate ranking was compiled for the September issue of Military Times EDGE no other Colorado institution made the four-year list.
The magazine ranks institutions based on services and policies that support veterans, including financial assistance, academic flexibility, campus culture, and support services for veterans. Examples of positive attributes might include the presence of veteran groups on campus, policies for handling military withdrawals, scholarships for veterans, acceptance of military schooling for academic credit, training of faculty and staff on veterans' issues, special staff or offices who handle veterans' issues, and special programs and events for veterans.
The rankings also looked at the percentage of vets in the student body, the presence of ROTC programs, Veterans Day observances, and outreach efforts to the military population. Only three schools, Western Kentucky, Cameron University, and CSU-Pueblo earned five out of five stars for financial assistance, academic flexibility, and support services.
CSU-Pueblo's Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) provides preparatory classes, academic advising, financial aid assistance, and mentorship to support the increasing number of military service members, veterans, and their families as they transition from military to civilian life. The VUB program at CSU-Pueblo is unique because of its partnerships with community colleges in Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
