Canon City police are experimenting with cops on beat program

Canon City Police are making an even larger impact in the lives of the people they serve.  I watched officers go old school and be part of the cops on the beat program.  Canon City Police Chief Paul Schultz tells me, "We want to be part of the community not apart from the community.  It's back to the future. The cop on the beat was a valuable thing many years ago. We are re-instituting that in Canon City."

During the whole month of September, 27 patrol officers are spending one hour in downtown Canon City talking with business owners and anyone else as they pound the pavement.  This on the beat duty is in addition to the officers regular duties.  Officer Shayne Corey is 100 percent behind it. He told me, "It gives us an opportunity to sit and talk sometimes about no problems with merchants.  Other times, they have concerns and they want to express it to us.  It gives us a chance to communicate.  Overall it's a great situation it gives us a chance to mingle with the community and give us a chance for them to get to know us."

Downtown Canon City merchant, Beverly Mehring is positive about the cops on the beat program.  She told me, "I don't know what we would do without them.  I"m glad they'll be around her more."

The Canon City Cops on the beat program will go on through the month of September.  It will take a break for the months of October and November.  Chief Schultz tells me it will be back for the month of December and expanded to include all the shopping areas, not just downtown.  After December, the program will be evaluated. Chief Schultz thinks the program will go citywide.
