Neighbors of the Clements family are sharing their condolences and telling KRDO Newschannel 13 they're shocked by the murder off Colonial Park Drive in Monument.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -

El Paso County sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly shooting on Tuesday night.

KRDO Newschannel 13 has learned the man killed in Tuesday night's shooting was Tom Clements. He was the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections.

A spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said Clements was killed as he was answering the door. He was the only person in the home on Colonial Park Drive targeted by the gunman.

Investigators said the killer may have left the neighborhood 90's Lincoln-type, 2-door car, black or dark colored. It was parked near Colonial Park and Scarsborough Court.

The sheriff's spokesman said a family member called 911 around 8:30 p.m. to report that the man had been shot.

"We did have some efforts from our K-9 unit to see if they could locate anything that might be helpful in this investigation, those efforts have been met with negative results," said Kramer.

Investigators have not released a suspect description on the person they're searching for.

Detectives are hoping to talk with a woman who was seen speedwalking in the area around the time of the shooting. They're hoping the woman last seen wearing white pants, a dark windbreaker and hat can give them more information about the suspicious car seen in the neighborhood.

Eric Brown, a spokesman for Gov. John Hickenlooper, said DOC employees and other state employees were notified early Wednesday morning about the murder. He said Gov. Hickenlooper would also likely make a public statement early Wednesday morning.

Colonial Park Drive is a residential road off Higby Road east of Monument, Colo.
