COLORADO SPRINGS -

Colorado Springs Police have activated the downtown safety cameras on Wednesday.

They will be monitored by 12 volunteers who have been trained and go through a back ground checked.

The police has originally requested  10 cameras to be installed in the downtown area at a cost of $188,000 and an addition $25,000 dollars a year for camera maintenance. Today police said they came under their 163,000 dollar budget and were able to purchase 13 cameras.

The video collected must be deleted 30 days after it is recorded unless it is being used in an investigation. Police also say they will conduct random checks to ensure volunteers are following protocol and not violating the public's privacy.
