Cameras Help Identify Dealers

Some people that like to hang out at Acacia Park told KRDO NewsChannel 13 they don't see a problem, but parents, business owners, and police said there is a drug sale problem there.

"If we come to the park we want to be able to play, and not have to worry about safety." said Stacy Gambill, the mother of a 6-year-old named Derek.

The Gambill’s avoid Acacia Park despite living nearby because of drug sales in the area, and said they have heard people talking about drug use like it’s no big deal.

“I've heard it in conversation just in passing walking through the park, and it's something you don't want your kids to hear, much less see.”

Police said they know about the problem, and have been able to make more arrests after the activation of the downtown security cameras.

“The cameras have really been a lot more successful than we initially thought. We started seeing immediate returns on our investment in the system,” said Stg. Jeff Strossner.

The cameras are monitored by volunteers who report suspicious activity to police that are patrolling the area, and so far have logged more than 200 hours.
