Fire in Pueblo displaces 5 kids, father

PUEBLO, Colo. -

A fire in a mobile home left five children and their father without a home.

The fire happened on the 2400 block of East Fourth Street, in the Continental Trailer Park in Pueblo. The family had just moved in on Tuesday. On Thursday afternoon, Brandon Romero was sitting in his family room watching TV, when he says he began feeling very warm. He walked over to his bedroom and saw that it was on fire.

At about 3:45 Thursday afternoon, their mobile home was quickly engulfed in flames. When the fire began, Romero was inside with his youngest daughter. At first, Romero says he tried to extinguish the flames.

"I put my daughter down you know for a quick second to try you know putting out the fire and I lost my daughter in the smoke and I was freaking out cause I didn't know where she was at and I guess somebody came in and grabbed her," Romero said.

Romero says a friend came in and pulled 22-month old Ariyana and 4-year-old Ezekiel to safety.

"All the fire was right almost coming to me," Ezekiel said.

"I had everything there," Romero said. "I have nothing now. No clothes for my kids. Pretty much lost everything that I own."

Romero and his five children are safe. Unfortunately, the family did lose one of its dogs in the fire. Nearby property was also affected.

"Mobile homes are usually fairly close together. The radiant heat- it actually did damage a trailer that was next to it. Heat and smoke damage," said Gary Micheli, a fire inspector with the Pueblo Fire Department.

For now, Romero and his children will be living with Romero's mom until they find a place to live.

Firefighters are continuing to investigate what caused the fire. Romero says he believes it was an outlet in his bedroom that he had seen sparking.
