Friends and the Florence community support shooting victim and soon-to-be new father, Caleb Medley.

FLORENCE, Colo. -

Friends of Caleb Medley said Monday that he is showing signs of improvement after being shot in the face during the movie theater massacre in Aurora.

"He's still critical, but he's stabilized," said friend Michael West, who's with Medley at the hospital.

West said that as Medley continues to fight for his life, he's about to become a new dad. Medley's wife, Katie, gave birth to the couple's first child on Tuesday morning.  They named the baby boy Hugo.

Meanwhile, Medley's friends are working to raise money for his medical expenses. According to the fundraising website that's been created, doctors say Medley will remain in the intensive care unit for one to two weeks, and that he's lost his eye and has brain damage. Friends said his medical costs could surpass a million dollars and he doesn't have health insurance.

A donation jar is set up at the Big D Super Foods in Florence where Medley worked for five years. Friends and former co-workers said Medley was known for his amazing sense of humor.

"Most of the population here in Florence knows him and has been impacted by him," said friend Jonas Hutchison. "The most fun-loving, caring person I've ever met. Always wanting to bring a smile to someone's face or just make people happy."

Medley is a stand up comedian who had recently moved from Florence to Denver. Friends said he and his wife, Katie, wanted to have a movie date before she gave birth.

Katie escaped the theater unharmed.

According to the fundraising website, Katie decribed what happened by saying, "I thought it was a prank at first, or someone playing along with the movie because it happened during a fight scene. Then he opened fire, and Caleb was shot in the right eye as they all tried to duck and cover. I didn't know how he was, because there was so much blood, but he was still moving, and he kept running his fingers through his hair."
