Middle school student brings gun to school

A 12-year-old middle school student in Pueblo West is facing felony charges. He's accused of bringing a gun to Liberty Point International School. Two students told a teacher they saw a male student showing off a gun.

"Nobody wants to have something like this happen, but the fact that those students did react well to that really did help us take care of this situation very quickly at the start of the day," said Ed Smith, District 70 superintendent.

The sheriff's office says the student never threatened anyone. But one parent, who did not want be identified, says a school secretary lied to her. She was dropping off her son late at school when she saw six sheriff cars parked outside. She called the school and says the secretary told her, "It's a D.A.R.E. Program and I said, 'oh so I can just bring him back' cause I didn't want to leave him knowing that something was going on," she said.

Parents are upset the school district didn't call them to tell them what was going on. Smith says the district's Internet wasn't working, otherwise parents would have received an automated phone call.

The student faces three charges, including a felony charge for unlawful carrying of a firearm on school grounds.
