PEYTON, Colo. -

Wednesday's storm brought the return of blizzard conditions north and east of Calhan. In Peyton, it was also a familiar story.

Firefighters in Peyton saw car slide offs once the sun went down. They said it's typical for people to be going too fast or hit an icy patch and slide off the road.

They urge you to stay with your car in those situations.

"Especially out here where there aren't too many houses it's easy for people to get disoriented in which direction they are heading," said Chris Evans, a firefighter with the Peyton Fire Department.

Wintry conditions caused the shut down of Highway 24 between Calhan and Limon for about four hours Wednesday. No serious injuries were reported as a result of the bad weather or wrecks along the highway.

Leaving your car in a snowstorm puts you at risk of freezing to death or hypothermia. Blowing snow can make it hard for firefighters to track down a stranded motorist who's walked away from their car.

"If its completely white out, we can see them with the thermal imaging camera," said Evans.

Instead of putting your fate in the hands of a thermal imaging camera though, firefighters hope you turn on your hazard lights and wait for help.
