Police say woman was assaulted at knifepoint while checking her mail at night.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Colorado Springs Police are looking for a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman last Saturday night.

Police said the assault happened around 8 p.m. in the area of University Village View and Pepperdine Point, near the intersection of Academy Boulevard and Vickers Drive.  Many apartments and townhomes are located in that area.

A spokesman with Z & R Property Management, the company responsible for the complex, spoke with KRDO NewsChannel 13 on Wednesday.  He said he had only learned of the assault through news reports and doesn't know enough about it to decide if security changes are needed at the complex.

Police said the victim was getting her mail at a community mailbox area when she was attacked by a man she did not know.

The man approached her from behind, held a knife to her side, covered her mouth and forced her to move to a field near the complex, police said, where the assault happened until a car drove by and scared the suspect away.

Police describe the suspect as a white man in his late 20s to early 30s, 6'2" to 6'3" with short, dark hair, a medium build and some facial hair.

Many neighbors said they hadn't heard about the assault until hearing news reports about it on Tuesday evening.    They say they'll reconsider getting their mail at night and are wondering what they'd do in a similar situation.

If you have any information about this case, you're asked to call police at 719-444-7000.
