1944: The Red Cross wins the Nobel Peace Prize for its work during World War II. The organization had also won the prize in 1917 for its work in World War I and would earn it again in 1963 during the year of its centenary.

WALSENBURG, Color. -

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Walsenburg for motorists stranded by winter weather.

The shelter is located at the Community Center in Walsenburg. That's at 1010 Russell Street.

Chain laws are in effect for the Raton Pass between southern Colorado and New Mexico though Interstate 25 has yet to close because of winter weather.

State Patrol reported no hotel vacancies in Trinidad Saturday night due to motorists' unexpected stops tied to the weather.
