A proposal suggests merging and closing some District 11 schools.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

The idea of shutting down some schools in Colorado Springs' largest district is back on the table. A committee tasked with figuring out the best way to use District 11's resources said big changes are needed.

A nearly 60-page packet details a dozen options for restructuring District 11. It includes changing boundaries, merging middle and high school programs and even closing down schools.

"The changes that are happening are kind of necessary, because this is really an aging neighborhood," said James Vetack, the parent of an eighth-grader at Galileo School.

Declining enrollment in some schools and overcrowding in others is part of the reason for the changes.

The School Optimization Project proposes closing or merging several elementary schools, along with Mann Middle School and Wasson High School.

Another option is to move Galileo students to Wasson to create a sixth - 12th grade school. Vetack doesn't like the idea.

"I think the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are too young to be mixed with high school kids," he said. "it would be a bad experience for the younger kids. It would make them grow up too fast, seeing all the other kids."

The proposed changes are only in its initial stages. To view the complete list of the 12 proposed changes, click here.

District officials will host meetings to gather input and ideas from parents, business owners and neighbors.

These are the scheduled input meeting dates and times:

Wednesday, Dec. 5, 6-8pm Doherty High School Auditorium

Monday, Dec. 10, 6-8pm Palmer High School Auditorium
