Bike fans from Oregon to Colorado Ssprings were out in droves for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge Friday.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Once again, Colorado Springs is vying to be a host city for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

The local committee joins a reported 19 communities vying for a spot.  Of those, 10 of them hosted parts of the race last year.

"Always a chance we won't get it," said Meredith Vaughan, Colorado Springs Organizing Committee Co-Chair.

But Vaughan said she hopes the selection committee will be swayed by the Springs proven ability to host the large event and the incredible numbers of local fans willing to help out.

"Last year we had to close the volunteer sign up in just two days," said Vaughan.

Race organizers estimated that inaugural race in 2011 had a million spectators and brought in $83.5 million.

The selection committee is expected to make its decision by early December.

In 2011, Colorado Springs hosted the opening gala and the first leg of the race.

Last year, it hosted the Stage 5 finish on Friday night.  Vaughan said they hope to host the same section again in 2013.
