Drive-by shooting injures Pueblo man

PUEBLO, Colo. -

A Pueblo man is recovering after being hit by a stray bullet fired six blocks away from him. Jason Riffe, 37, was struck by a bullet in his foot.

Police say the shots were fired from the intersection of Baystate Avenue and Stone Avenue. Riffe was standing by Baystate Avenue and Spruce Street. The incident happened Sunday just before 1 p.m.

Justin George was standing outside his home, showing his car to Riffe when he heard what he says sounded like gunshots. "I've heard them around in my neighborhood before. Didn't really think anything about it," George said. "The next thing I know my friend's on the ground. He's like 'hey man call 911, I've just been shot.'"

Police say a stray bullet struck Riffe in his left foot. George says he never saw anyone drive by.

"The shot just went to the east and flew there and hit him in the foot while he was out working on the vehicle," said Sgt. Charles Bonomelli of the Pueblo Police Department. "He was wrong place at the wrong time."

Police have found five casings. One of the bullets pierced through a window on Stone Avenue. Police say the shooting appears to be random.

"I feel bad for him, but I'm glad that it was only his foot. It could have been a lot worse," George said.

Police are looking for two cars in connection with the shooting. One car is described as a red Chevy Cobalt with tinted windows. Witnesses describe the other vehicle as either a white Pontiac or a white Buick.

Anyone with information is asked to call Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-7867
