A standoff Thursday on Thundercloud Drive ends with a man killing himself. He leaves behind a wife and two teenage sons.

A standoff Thursday near Rangewood Drive and Research Parkway ended with a man's suicide.

It happened in the 3900 block of Thundercloud Drive. Police said they were not releasing the man's name late Thursday because all of his family members had not been notified.

The man leaves behind a wife and two teenage sons who gathered for a prayer in front of the house as police finished their investigation.

Police said just before 1 p.m., one of the man's sons called them to say his dad had punched through a car window and threatened to blow up the home.

When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself inside the house, telling police he had a rifle and had rigged the house with explosives. Police said they believed the man did have access to explosive material because he's a welder and they could see tanks of some sort in the garage.

About a dozen homes were evacuated and streets shut down in the area until about 8 p.m., after police had entered the house and learned the man had shot himself.

"I'm shocked," said Matt Warner who lives on the block. "I didn't expect to come home and find out one of my neighbors had killed himself. I'd seen him in passing, and he seemed like a normal, nice guy."

Police said they had been called to the house before for domestic problems, and the man may have been upset because his wife wanted a divorce.
