Mertz is Free on Bond

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

A Colorado Springs science teacher admits to having a relationship with one of his students, according to court documents.

Police arrested Bryan Paul Mertz, 40, for an alleged sexual relationship with a student. Multiple Air Acdemy High School students reported having seen the two on a date. That is when an investigation began.

Mertz was an anotomy/physiology teacher at Air Academy High School for the last 12 years according to a school District 20 spokesperson.

Court documents indicate the relationship began shortly after the girl confessed having feelings for Mertz, and said she wanted to drop his class.

Police reported both the girl and Mertz admitted to going multiple dates and "making out." The two having sex, however, is never mentioned in court records.

When police asked Mertz why the relationship happened, court records indicate he said it was a stupid decision, and, "he liked the attention."

Police said Mertz may have tried the same thing with students in the past. They want to hear from anyone with information about Mertz and inappropriate relationships. Call Colorado Springs Police at 444-7000 or Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers 634-STOP (7867.)
