Police in Greenville, North Carolina said Sunday that a Ft. Carson soldier was arrested there after he allegedly killed his girlfriend in a Colorado Springs hotel.

The woman found dead on Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs has been identified as 28-year-old Kimberly Walker.

Colorado Springs Police responded to the hotel on Circle Drive around 6:30 Sunday morning for a "check the well being" call. When they arrived, they found Walker's body in the room they were checking.

Greenville, North Carolina police said Montrell Lamar Anderson Mayo, 24, turned himself in Sunday afternoon for the killing. Mayo is originally from Greenville and still has family there, according to officers.  Mayo is a soldier stationed at Fort Carson.

Greenville police said Walker may have died as early as Valentine's Day.  On Tuesday, the El Paso County Coroner's Office announced that the cause of Walker's death was strangulation with a contributing factor of blunt force injury.

Walker was also in the Army, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.  She was assigned to the 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion and served as a petroleum supply specialist.  A Fort Riley spokesperson told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that Walker joined the military in 2004 and deployed to Iraq in 2010.  Walker was originally from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Scanner traffic indicated that Mayo called his friend in Colorado Springs from Greenville and told him that his girlfriend was dead in a hotel room. The friend reported the information, according to scanner traffic. Police said Sunday morning they couldn't confirm that.

Mayo is being held without bond and is accused of first-degree murder.
