Community donates holiday decorations for fire victims.

More than 100 families affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire gathered at the Front Range Alliance Church Saturday to pick up free holiday decorations. It was part of the Waldo Canyon Fire Holiday Giveaway.

The event was put together by community members who had collected donated trees, wrapping paper, and other Christmas decorations. The families had the opportunity to take home boxes and bags full of free things.

"We'll use it for years to come," said Kate Stefani. Her family lost its home in the fire. "Our home was completely lost, completely leveled, and so nothing was salvageable when we went back to look at it."

On Saturday, Stefani and her son were two of the first in a large crowd sorting through the holiday decorations. Ornaments, snow globes, and wreaths were only some of the choices. The children took home books, toys, and ornaments they made themselves.

"I think it's a good thing to give them a real head start, into getting into the spirit," volunteer Mandy Houk said. "Because it's going to take them a little while. And they just need those sentimental things replenished."

All the items came from donations - most from the local community, but some from out of state. Recipients said they were grateful.

"I wish I could thank every one of them," Stefani said. "I wish I could give them each a thank you card, and thank them from the bottom of my heart for doing this."
