A man who was shot and killed after trying to flee from Woodland Park police on Tuesday has been identified as 20-year-old Craig Bondo.

A Woodland Park police officer shot and killed a man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle.

Eastbound U.S. 24 reopened Tuesday night after being closed near the Woodland Park Walmart because of the officer-involved shooting.

In a news release, police said they were trying to make an arrest around 2:30 p.m.  The driver of a vehicle was pulled over and it was determined that the vehicle was stolen out of Colorado Springs.

As the officers attempted to detain the driver, he tried to drive away, hitting one of the officers with the vehicle.  An officer then opened fire on the suspect, who has been identified as 20-year-old Craig Bondo of Colorado Springs.  Bondo was taken to a hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced dead.

The officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave.  The 4th Judicial District Attorney's office will lead in the investigation.

Robert Williams said he saw police approach the vehicle in the highway median with their guns drawn.  They pulled the man out of the vehicle and laid him on the ground, he said, then called paramedics over to treat him.

"I didn't see any movement out of the person on the ground at all," said Williams.

Several people in the area said they heard gunfire.  One man said he heard five shots.  The back window of the vehicle was shattered, possibly by a bullet.
The name of the officers involved in the incident haven't been released.

The quarter-mile stretch of highway that was closed for the the investigation reopened around 9 p.m. Tuesday.  Eastbound drivers were detoured around the Walmart on Old Crystola Road, also known as County Road 21, during the closure.
