Air Force Academy flights draw noise complaints

Published On: Nov 13 2013 10:50:32 AM CST

People who live near the Air Force Academy outside Colorado Springs are complaining about noise from a new flight pattern and increased use at the school's airfield.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports more than 100 people attended a meeting to talk with academy officials Tuesday.
The academy changed flight patterns in January after federal aviation officials warned of conflicts with commercial air routes into Denver and Colorado Springs. Flights at the airfield then increased when budget cuts drove the academy to shut down an auxiliary field near Ellicott.
Academy leaders say the new flight patterns are safer but said they should have explained the changes to neighbors sooner. They say they are trying to find money to re-open the auxiliary field and reduce air traffic at the school.
