Sergeant James Butierres is defended by family and friends

A two page arrest affidavit doesn’t tell the whole story of Colorado Springs Police Sergeant James Butierres according to his brother and a long time friend.

“I don’t believe, can’t imagine, it’s completely out of character for him, so I’m having a very hard time believing he did anything,” said his younger brother, Dominic Butierres.

“He is the most honest, sincere, hard working person that I’ve been around,” said longtime friend John Martinez.

According to the arrest affidavit, Sgt. Butierres, who supervises the motor vehicle theft task force, submitted at least 56 hours of time that he had not actually worked.  That resulted in $2,489 in pay he didn’t earn.

Investigators say in a mirandized interview, Sgt. Butierres admitted that he had submitted time worked for hours that he had not actually worked.

“Those who know him, know that there’s two sides to every story and the truth comes out and let’s let the justice system figure that out,” Dominic Butierres said.

Butierres faces a district court judge Wednesday afternoon.

“Jimmy is devastated, he’s just appalled with what is going on,” Martinez said.
