ASPEN, Colo. -

Aspen police say a woman suffered minor injuries after a bear swiped at her as she walked in a downtown alley.

The bear injured her abdomen and leg in the attack early Sunday morning. Police say the woman was treated and released. She was identified by the Aspen Daily News as off-duty Pitkin County sheriff's deputy Erin Smiddy.

The bear is believed to be the same one spotted in a dumpster about a half hour before the attack. People crowded around the bear until a police officer used his lights and sirens to scare it away.

Because it injured a person, the bear could be euthanized if it's found.

During nights in bear season, police say people should try to avoid alleys with dumpsters and restaurant grease traps that can attract bears.
