Black Forest Together hosts community 'evening of joy'

Black Forest community gathered at the Pinery for a holiday event. KRDO NEWSCHANNEL 13 tried to get answers from Fire Chief Bob Harvey, regarding decisions he made the day of the fire.

The Black Forest community came together Tuesday at a special holiday event for people affected by the summer's massive wildfire.

About 350 people attended the "Evening of Joy," held at the Pinery. People who lost their homes in the fire came to support one another and to thank the volunteers.

"When you lose everything, and you walk in and you see all these people, it kind of makes you feel so appreciative of what you do have," Beverly Savoy said.

Also at the event, was Black Forest Fire Chief Bob Harvey. We asked him if he was ready to talk about the decisions he made the day of the fire and the criticism he faced from the sheriff's office and others.

"I really don't have any comment to make," he said. "The investigation is ongoing and it'll bring it all out."

Following KRDO NEWSCHANNEL13's investigation, the Black Forest Fire Rescue Protection District Board of Directors called for an independent investigation into the day's events.

"The whole situation will be all cleared up," Harvey said.

Harvey wouldn't say why he hired an investigator to look into the cause of the fire, even though the sheriff's office is already leading an investigation. And he said he had no opinion regarding the petitions - one for and one against him.

"It's America, everybody gets to petition," he said.

One man at the event told us he supports Harvey.

"I think he did an excellent job in spite of some terrible conditions," Bill Buckman said.

Others told us they will form an opinion once they see the results from the board's investigation. In the meantime, they're keeping a positive holiday attitude.
