CDOT upgraded its app to send push notifications to users if there's a severe traffic issue on I-25 or I-70.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

CDOT now provides real-time push notifications to users of the CDOT Mobile application.

The notifications appear in the notification bar of smartphones and will inform people about severe traffic issues that could seriously impact a trip during prime travel hours.

"One of the things that we're hoping is that these push notifications are yet one more tool that people have in the arsenal as far as how they might be able to plan their trips," said Amy Ford, director of communications for CDOT.

There are more planned enhancements to the app, according to CDOT.  Some drivers wonder when there will be push notifications available for U.S. 24.  U.S. 24 has been hit hard by flash flooding in recent months.  CDOT can tell traffic speed and conditions, but not much beyond that.

"We are looking at a variety of different technology solutions that will help us inform the traveling public on U.S. 24," Ford said.

Among those solutions, Ford said, they are looking at sensors that can assess rain flow and how those sensors can then link to a message sign that automatically posts information.

Brad Helzer, a southern Colorado driver and CDOT app user, told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that better information from U.S. 24 would be helpful to him and other drivers.  Helzer likes the accessibility of real-time traffic information on his smartphone.

"It's a huge part of my life and, I think, a lot of people's lives," Helzer said.  "To take that into account when you're doing business and development is going to be huge in the coming years."

Real-time push notifications will only be sent to users of CDOT Mobile during peak travel times so as not to overburden them with information during less congested hours, CDOT said in a press release.

To download CDOT's free CDOT Mobile smartphone application, visit the App Store or Google Play store and search "CDOT Mobile".
