Couple accused of burglary claimed to be theft victims themselves

The couple accused of stealing guns and causing a manhunt in Fremont County aren't strangers to KRDO. We talked to them after they recovered their stolen truck.

The couple arrested in Fremont County accused of burglarizing a home, stealing guns and causing a manhunt said they were the theft victims last time they appeared on KRDO Newschannel 13.

Our crew met Raymond and Kimberly Lannigan in November 2012 after they found the truck they had reported stolen being driven on the road next to them. The couple cut off the female driver, stopped traffic and detained the driver until police arrived.

Instead of calling police officers, the couple is accused of running from them Wednesday, causing a manhunt that involved about 50 officers as well as K-9s around CaƱon City. The Lannigans were taken into custody early Thursday.

"It wasn't really a surprise," said the couple's son Kyle Cunningham.

He said drug addiction has changed his parents from the people he used to know.

"They would look me straight in the eyes and tell me, 'There's nothing I hate worse than thieves and liars,' and I looked up to my step-dad for that. I kind of ran my life off that. And to turn around and see them in this situation, it's kind of pathetic," Kyle said.

In the year and a half since the couple re-claimed their truck, Ray Lannigan has plead guilty to theft and has three separate open cases for theft and possession of methamphetamine. Kimberly's record is minimal.

Kyle said he has a message for his parents: "Stop using. It's obviously tearing up your life, and you have a family that cares about you. They want you to be there. But it's not going to happen if you're like this."

The Lannigans were taken to the Fremont County jail where they are facing charges of first degree burglary, felony theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender (Raymond), vehicular eluding, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and criminal trespass. Their bail is set at $15,000 each.
