Defense chief to visit Colorado military sites

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel arrives in Colorado Springs on June 27, 2013

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is getting a look inside a military bunker tunneled into a Colorado mountain.

Hagel will tour Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station in Colorado Springs Friday. He's then scheduled to take questions from about 150 soldiers at nearby Fort Carson.

Hagel's visit comes as the military is scaling back under a long-term strategic plan and because of mandatory budget cuts. Fort Carson will lose a major combat unit but will actually gain soldiers as part of a larger Army reorganization.

The military dug into Cheyenne Mountain during the Cold War to build a missile-proof control room for the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The primary control room is now above ground at Peterson Air Force Base, a few miles away. Cheyenne Mountain is used as a backup.
