Economic gains of bringing Amtrak to Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. -

The benefits of extending Amtrak's Southwest Chief passenger train into Pueblo outweigh the costs, according to a CSU-Pueblo professor.

Professor Kevin Duncan presented an economic impact study before community leaders on Thursday. He said if Amtrak adds a stop in Pueblo, it would attract 15,700 riders annually. Duncan projects it would generate $6.7 million into the city every year.

According to his projections, it would cost Colorado about $40 million to repair its share of rail. Amtrak is considering diverting its route due to maintenance issues.

Duncan said Colorado could also gain financially if Amtrak decides to use rail produced at the Evraz steel mill to fix about 100 miles of rail on its Kansas line.
