A vacant house is destroyed Wednesday.

FOUNTAIN, Colo. -

A fire that destroyed an abandoned house in Fountain on Wednesday was contained by firefighters before it could spread and threaten other property.

The fire was reported around 9:30 a.m. on Jimmy Camp Road at the Countryside Grove intersection.

Flames shot out of the roof and smoke could be seen from Interstate 25 at the height of the fire.  The roof later collapsed.

The Fountain Fire Department and the Fountain Police Department are investigating how the fire started.

"Whether a transient or homeless person was in there, or it's arson, or something else, we don't know," said Fire Chief Darin Anstine.  "But the house had been vacant for some time, and no utilities were on in there."

Anstine said he sent every fire station in town to the scene because he was concerned that strong winds might spread the the fire to nearby trees and surrounding homes.

Firefighters actually cut down some tree limbs around the house to reduce the fire danger.  Another vacant home next door wasn't damaged.

The burned home was scheduled to be demolished, neighbors said, with new housing to be built on the property eventually.
