First construction underway in Black Forest burn area

A property owner in Black Forest is on the fast track. His is the first building under construction after the wildfire that sparked a little more than a month ago.

A couple in Black Forest who lost their home in the fire is on the fast track to rebuilding. Theirs is the first construction in the burn area.

Just a month ago, Stafford Brochu and his wife had minutes to escape from their property on Crump Road.

"Literally everything was destroyed," Brochu said. "We had five minutes to get out, so we didn't take very much stuff with us."

Brochu said even as the fire was burning, he was already planning the rebuild. He's a carpenter and wanted his workshop up first. Just over a month after the fire started, that work hop is well underway, and he says builders will start on the house in about two weeks.

"It's going so fast that I can hardly keep up to it!" he said. "It's really exciting."

He said good insurance (Farmers), a great team of builders and his love of Black Forest are what put him on the fast track.

While Pikes Peak Regional Building says Brochu is furthest along in the rebuilding process, about 250 property owners have now pulled permits in the Black Forest burn area. Most permits are for debris removal, the first step in rebuilding.

"I like to see everybody digging in and getting back to work and making a new place to live," Brochu said. "In a few years, we'll have trees 4 to 5 feet tall already and it'll be a forest again. It will be beautiful. We'll make it that way."

He said he and his wife will soon start living on the property in their motor home, and that they expect to be in their new house by November.
