COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

A week after Colorado Springs got hit hard with rain, one woman said the damage in her apartment has only gotten worse.

Laura Montez lives at the El Vecino Apartments on Monterey Road. Rainwater that had accumulated on her apartment complex's roof flooded into her unit. Her carpet got wet and she had several leaks throughout the ceiling. Now she said the ceiling is ready to cave in. And there are other issues.

"The smell of mold and mildew is just atrocious in mine and my daughter's room," she said.

Colorado Springs Code Enforcement said the apartment is borderline uninhabitable.

"Because it's getting worse, because of the delays with all the new rain, it is possible that we may have to condemn that unit," Interim Code Enforcement Supervisor Tom Wasinger said.

El Vecino management is working with Montez to place her in a different apartment. But Montez said they give her two options that don't work for her and her three children - a one-bedroom apartment or a smaller two-bedroom apartment she said has the reputation of having bed bugs.

She said she doesn't know what to do, because she can't stay where she is.

"I just don't know. It's hard because I don't want to live like this. Every time I see clouds rolling over that mountain, I get scared," she said. "I'm like 'oh no, here we go again. What's going to happen today? We need to pick everything up. Everybody be on the lookout.' I don't like living like that."

KRDO NEWSCHANNEL13 contacted El Vecino owner Terry Ragan. He said management would contact Montez and that if she tells them what her needs are, they will place her in the Ragan-owned property of her choice. Or they could break her lease if she chooses to go elsewhere.
