COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

In the eyes of the law in Colorado, recreational marijuana is legal, but what about in the eyes of God?

“There are some medical benefits derived from it,” said Focus on the Family president, Jim Daly.

Focus on the Family is one of the most influential evangelical Christian organizations in the world.

Daly spoke exclusively on the subject to KRDO the day after he wrote a blog post titled “Moral and Biblical Thoughts About Marijuana.”

“I think it is unwise to expand marijuana use beyond medical,” Daly said.  “Many drugs are derived from bases, like opium.  Heroin is made from opium but doesn’t mean we legalize heroin because it’s used pharmaceutically.  I think it’s a false argument.”

Daly also doesn’t buy the argument about tax revenue recreational marijuana is bringing into state and local governments.

“We could do a lot more in a lot of different areas to raise revenue.  Prostitution, we could go right down the line,” Daly said.  “Are these the best things we should do to legalize those things in order to generate revenue for the treasury?  I think generations before us have said no and I think they had wisdom in doing that.”

Marijuana legalization hasn’t been a major issue Focus on the Family has fought against.  Partly because Daly says he isn’t convinced it will last.

“I think 5-10 years from now we’re going to look back on this and say maybe that wasn’t such a wise idea and we’re going to rescind those laws,” Daly said.
