Denver -

Former Arapahoe County District Attorney Jim Peters has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 62.

Peters died on Wednesday (2/21/14).

Peters prosecuted the case of convicted Chuck E. Cheese killer Nathan Dunlap, who is now on death row.

Peters was a native of Colorado who attended the University of Colorado School of Law. Following law school he joined the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office and prosecuted a wide range of cases. He was first elected district attorney in 1996 and was re-elected in 2000.

Former Gov. Bill Ritter, who served on boards and councils with Peters, described Peters as a serious prosecutor to his core and a great public servant.

Peters is survived by his wife and son.
