Former Lamar baseball player killed in Arizona wildfire

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -

A former baseball player at Lamar Community College was one of 19 firefighters killed while battling a wildfire in Arizona on Sunday. Wade Parker was a member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who was killed while fighting the Yarnell Hill Wildfire.

Lamar played baseball for the Runnin' Lopes his freshman year, from 2009-10. He then moved back to Arizona to pursue his dream of becoming a firefighter. Head baseball coach Scott Crampton said Parker made his teammates better.

"He was a pleasant young man to be around. Always had a positive attitude. Always wanted to come out and give it all he had that day, every day," Crampton said.

Former teammates describe Parker as a strong Christian who lived out his faith. Parker is the son of a fire captain, and had just recently joined the hotshot crew.

He was engaged to get married in the fall to his high school sweetheart Alicia Owens.
