Fort Carson releases statement on government shutdown

Fort Carson spent Monday (9/30/13) bracing for a government shutdown. The Mountain Post has released the following statement detailing how local military families would likely be affected.

In anticipation of a potential government shutdown, Fort Carson has been prudently planning to implement necessary measures to comply with funding constraints. In the event of a shutdown, the installation would have to reduce staffing and operations to minimal levels. However, we would continue to support key military operations, provide for the safety of human life and protect property.

We know that the uncertainty of the current situation puts federal employees in a difficult position and that a shutdown would impose hardships on our military and civilian personnel as well as our military families.

Military service members would not be subject to furlough and would report for duty as normal during the shutdown.

Civilian Department of Defense personnel deemed to be performing "excepted", e.g., necessary, activities would continue to work.  Excepted activities include any operations that provide for the safety of human life and the protection of property (i.e., the military police, the fire department), child care centers, the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response Prevention office, the Evans Army Community Hospital emergency room and the majority of the hospital's clinics. However, elective surgeries at Evans would be cancelled. The Fort Carson commissary would remain open through tomorrow and then close for the duration of the furlough. Army and Air Force Exchange Services would continue to operate all facilities, including Fort Carson's post exchange and gas stations. AAFES would also carry an extra supply of essential items such as milk, bread, eggs, etc.

DoD civilians who support non-excepted activities would have to be placed on emergency, non-pay furloughs. Non-excepted employees would be required to report to work on Oct. 1 to receive their official furlough notice.
