Missing Fountain woman found after crash

An elderly woman with Alzheimer's disease missing from Fountain was found in Pueblo after she crashed into a gate.

Christane Williams, 90, was reported missing Wednesday after she didn't return home from a trip to a bank. Williams drove to Brighton before she found Douglas County deputies around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Ron Hanavan, public information officer for the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, said deputies evaluated Williams and decided she was coherent and let her go.

"She was answering questions appropriately. She was doing everything appropriate. Her driving actions were actually fine," Hanavan said.

Faye Williams, Christane Williams' daughter, said her mom should never have been driving. She said she asked deputies to drive her mom home.

"You know we've been looking for her. Why didn't you just take her home? I asked them can't they take her home because no one could come get her," Faye Williams said.

But Hanavan said that's not what happened. He said Faye Williams told deputies to escort her mom to Interstate 25 and then let her drive home alone. According to Hanavan, Christane Williams was not a danger to herself.

Hanavan said, "If we saw something that indicated anything else, we would have taken action."

Hanavan said the department stands by its decision.

After the crash, Christane Williams was transported to Parkview Hospital. She crashed into a gate on Department of Transportation Road in eastern Pueblo County  She suffered minor injuries.
