FOUNTAIN, Colo. -

Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 says rumors of a threat to Fountain-Fort Carson High School are unfounded and that no one was ever in any danger.

The district says the rumors began with a statement someone made on social media on the evening of Monday, February 3, 2014.

The district says that the statement was investigated and that at no time did the district believe any students, faculty or staff members were in danger.

D-8 says that overnight Monday into Tuesday the initial social media post grew to hundreds of rumors of serious threats that spread like wildfire on Facebook and Twitter.

"Fear and rumors led to more fear and rumors when in reality no one was ever in danger." - Fountain-Fort Carson School Dist. 8

The Fountain-Fort Carson School District says threats and rumors should be reported to school administration or teachers as soon as possible. This information can be shared directly or anonymously through Safe2Tell at (719) 520-7435. D-8 says that in the case of Monday and Tuesday's incident, both processes worked, but that social media perpetuated the rumors and created a lot of unnecessary fear for parents and students.

The district asks parents and students not to spread rumors on social media.
