GOP try to repeal Colo. expanded background checks

Published On: Feb 03 2014 11:52:00 AM CST

Colorado Republicans and gun rights advocates will argue for a repeal of expanded background checks on firearms that passed in the aftermath of recent mass shootings.

A Republican Senate bill is expected to draw a big crowd when it is heard in committee Monday afternoon. However, repeal supporters face long odds because Democrats have the votes to defeat the legislation.
Last year, Democrats passed gun-control laws that included limiting ammunition magazines to 15 rounds and requiring background checks for private and online sales.
Pueblo Republican Sen. George Rivera is sponsoring the bill to repeal the new background check requirements.
Two Democratic senators lost their jobs as a result through subsequent recall elections, and a third resigned under pressure when a recall effort was underway.
Rivera replaced one of the recalled lawmakers.
