Group continues efforts to recall Angela Giron three weeks shy of petition deadline
A Pueblo group working to recall state Sen. Angela Giron, D-Pueblo, said it's on track collecting necessary signatures.
Pueblo Freedom & Rights is leading the recall efforts. The group rallied outside of the Pueblo County Courthouse Monday afternoon with more than 50 people backing the recall.
Victor Head, the organizer of the group, said he's not sure how many signatures have been gathered because the group has passed out petitions throughout Pueblo County. Head says he needs 11,285 signatures by June 10.
Head is upset that Giron's supporters have been passing out postcards, claiming that wealthy, outside interest groups are behind the recall. He says none of the money he's raised has come from corporations and that less than a thousand dollars has come from outside of Colorado.
"She [Giron] received thousands of phone calls, thousands of people showed up to town hall meetings- all overwhelmingly against the gun control measures and she still voted for them and then actually said she was happy to push back against her foes, which is her whole district," Head said.
Pueblo County Clerk Gilbert "Bo" Ortiz says the recall would cost about $250,000. Ortiz says the recall would initially be paid for by Pueblo County taxpayers, but he says the question remains if and when the state would reimburse the county.
A small group of Giron's supporters were also at the event, rallying support for the senator.
