Local school district to ask property owners for tax increase

MONUMENT, Colo. -

The Lewis-Palmer School District Board of Education voted Friday to ask property owners for a mill levy increase.

The tax increase question will be on the ballot in November, and will read as follows:

SHALL LEWIS-PALMER CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 38 TAXES BE INCREASED $4.5 MILLION IN 2014, AND ANNUALLY THEREAFTER BY THE IMPOSITION OF AN ADDITIONAL MILL LEVY OF NOT TO EXCEED 10.5 MILLS; AND SHALL THE PROCEEDS OF SUCH TAX INCREASE BE USED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

· PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH THE INSTRUCTION AND SKILLS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS IN COLLEGE AND THE WORKPLACE IN AREAS INCLUDING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATH, AND THE ARTS;
· PROVIDING FOR LEADING EDGE INSTRUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY, ENABLING ADVANCED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS;
· RESTORING TEACHERS AND PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS NEEDING ADDITIONAL SUPPORT;  
· PROVIDING FUNDS FOR RESTORING THE TEACHING POSITIONS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE OPTIMAL CLASS SIZES;
· RECRUITING AND RETAINING HIGH QUALITY TEACHERS TO MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE;
· PROVIDING FUNDS TO ENHANCE THE SAFETY AND SECURITY ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF;

SHALL SUCH TAX INCREASE BE AN ADDITIONAL PROPERTY TAX MILL LEVY IN EXCESS OF THE LEVY AUTHORIZED FOR THE DISTRICT'S GENERAL FUND; AND SHALL THE DISTRICT BE AUTHORIZED TO COLLECT, RETAIN AND SPEND ALL REVENUES FROM SUCH TAXES AND THE EARNINGS FROM THE INVESTMENT OF SUCH REVENUES AS A VOTER APPROVED REVENUE CHANGE AND AN EXCEPTION TO THE LIMITS WHICH WOULD OTHERWISE APPLY UNDER ARTICLE X, SECTION 20 OF THE COLORADO CONSTITUTION?



Election day is November 5.
