Loved ones remember Spc. Rob Nichols

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Family and friends of Army Spc. Rob Nichols gathered at Holy Apostles Catholic Church Saturday to honor the life of the fallen soldier.

Spc. Nichols died in action in Afghanistan in July. He was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in Fort Stewart, Ga. His service was an honor to his family.

"I know it was very hard for him and his family to have him leave and to go through all of that he had to go through to become a top-notch disciplined soldier, and I was really proud of him," aunt Lyn Ribisi said.

After the funeral, attendants celebrated Spc. Nichols' military service. He earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Both were awarded posthumously.

Spc. Nichols' was remembered for his perseverance, selflessness and joy.

"He was just a phenomenal guy," friend Jason Dandino said. "He was always in a good mood, always lifting up spirits on the team, always the first one to ask you how your day was and everything. He was just a great guy all around."
