FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. -

A 46-year-old man wanted for violating a protection order is in Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs after being shot three times during a confrontation with authorities in Fremont County Wednesday night, according to a release issued this morning.

A news conference is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. at the county sheriff's office to provide more details about the shooting.

According to a joint release from the sheriff's office and Canon City police, John Freyta was shot by a deputy and an officer just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after Freyta had led authorities on a high-speed pursuit.

Freyta is a county resident, the release said.  He's listed in stable condition at Penrose.

According to the release, the shooting happened near the locked gates of a trail head on Tunnel Drive.  Earlier, Freyta was seen by authorities and sped from them along U.S. 50 west of Canon City.

Freyta turned around at Skyline Drive and headed east on the highway to the entrance of Tunnel Drive and through the parking area at the base of the trail, according to the release.

The deputy and officer are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
