MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. -

Ghosts with some get up and go hit the streets in Manitou Springs today.

Hundreds of people came to watch the Emma Crawford Coffin Races down Manitou Avenue and cheer on their favorite teams. Each team picked a theme and designed their own coffin and costumes.

The event has kept many people, both competitors and spectators, coming back every year.

“This town is unique. The ghouls are out. The spirits are out,” said a competitor from “Ghouls Gulch” dressed as Valak.

“I love this event. It brings out a lot of people from the community. It's a lot of fun,” said spectator Kim Meyer.

The Ghouls Gluch team came in first place today. They also won the best entourage. The best Emma Crawford was from Memorials ICU.

Emma died of tuberculosis in 1890. Her fiancee who was a cog railway engineer at the time carried her coffin to the top of red mountain for burial. A year later her coffin slid down the mountain inspiring the event.
