Here are events scheduled in observance of Memorial Day in the Southern Colorado region:
FREMONT COUNTY: From a black powder rifle shoot to a pancake breakfast, Fremont County will celebrate Memorial Day with a bang.
The 38th annual Black Powder Shoot and Rendezvous will be held at Florence Mountain Park Saturday through Monday. The public is welcome. There will be pre-1840-style primitive camping, shooting competitions, an open trade session, music and more.
The Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery Committee will host a Memorial Day observance at 11 a.m. Saturday at the historic cemetery on South First Street. The event will feature the Colorado Mounted Rangers Color Guard, a flag ceremony at both the Grand Army of the Republic and Confederate sections of the cemetery, and guest speaker Sen. Kevin Grantham.
The Howard Volunteer Fire Department will host a Memorial Day pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Howard fire station, 8274 U.S. 50. The event will feature all-you-can-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee and juice. Cost is $5 for adults or $3 for children 11 and younger.
CHAFFEE COUNTY: Chaffee County will celebrate Memorial Day weekend with a motorcycle rally, bluegrass music and more.
The Fallen Bikers Memorial Rally will run today through Sunday at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds in Poncha Springs. Events will include live entertainment, a beer garden, vendors, bike show, bike rodeo and tattoo contest.
The Salida Rotary Club will host its annual Bluegrass Festival Saturday and Sunday at Riverside Park, First Street and Sackett. The free event will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday with two bands performing, and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday with six bands taking the stage. Food concessions and children's games also will be available.
The American Legion plans to host a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. Sunday on the top of Hoosier Pass. Another Memorial Day Service, hosted by the Boy Scouts and the American Legion, is slated for 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Buena Vista.
CUSTER COUNTY: WESTCLIFFE - A parade, pancakes and historic pursuits are slated for Memorial Day weekend in the Wet Mountain Valley.
All Aboard Westcliffe will host a benefit pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Caboose on Main Street. The group also will open its museum, 110 Rosita Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday where a yard sale also will be held.
The Town of Westcliffe will host a Memorial Day Parade starting at 10 a.m. Saturday along Main Street.
The American Legion Post 170 will host a Memorial Day Ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park. In case of inclement weather, the location will be moved to the Custer County School's east gym.
ALAMOSA COUNTY: Colorado State Veterans Center Homelake Memorial Day observance at Homelake Cemetery, 3749 Sherman Ave. in Monte Vista, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The event will feature honor and color guards, USS General Patrick bell tolling, wreath presentations, Fort Garland Memorial Regiment, keynote speaker will be Master Sgt. David Carr.
The Homelake History Center & Museum will be open following the service until 12:30 p.m. Cinnamon rolls will be served following the observance in the Old Dining Room.
