The Colorado Springs mother accused of drowning her own son admitted to killing him, according to court documents obtained by KRDO NewsChannel 13.
Shannon Dodson faces a first degree murder charge in the death of her son, five-year-old Jude Murray-Gomez.
According to Dodson's affidavit, when detectives asked her if she knew why they wanted to speak with her, she said, "because I killed my son."
The affidavit said she started to cry and said, she shouldn't have done it, she didn't know why she did it, she thought they would go together and she couldn't believe she did it.
Firefighters found the five-year-old boy when they responded to a fire at the Hill Park Apartments on East Pikes Peak Avenue Friday. The court documents said they found the boy wrapped in a smoldering blanket between a bed and a wall. And that they found Dodson naked and wet inside a closed closet, with her eyes closed. The boy showed no visible signs of life, but he along with Dodson were taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the affidavit reads.
According to the court documents, Detectives and firefighters also found furniture and other things just inside the entrance as if they had been put there to barricade the door. They also found that the fire was in the only occupied bedroom in the apartment. Most of the damage was in the side of a mattress near where the five-year-old was found. There were also matches and a half-empty bottle of what looked like sleeping pills. Detectives also saw the bathtub filled with water to the overflow drain.
Detectives also spoke with relatives. One of Dodson's daughter said "her mom told her that she wanted to die and would kill Jude and kill herself." But after talking to her, Dodson said she wouldn't do it, the affidavit reads. One of the boy's aunts told detectives the he told her "he didn't like to shower or take baths at his mom's house because she liked to dunk his head under water."
