New trial in double-homicide case

Published On: Apr 09 2014 11:47:06 AM CDT

Nearly 20 years after being sentenced to life in prison for the double fatal shooting of an El Paso County couple, a new trial is under way for Timothy Kennedy.

Steve Staskiewicz and his 15-year-old girlfriend Jennifer Carpenter were murdered in a mobile home in Old Colorado City in 1991. The new trial began Tuesday.
Kennedy was arrested in 1995 for the shootings, convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Kennedy served 14 years of a life sentence until 2009, when new evidence emerged.  A letter written by Charles Stroud, whom public defender Sheilagh McAteer pointed to as a viable suspect, suggested a cover up in the homicides. Tests showed none of Kennedy's DNA was ever found at the crime scene.
