FOUNTAIN, Colo. -

A 12-year-old boy who was injured in a car accident in Fountain Monday (9/23/13) has passed away.

The accident, which involved three vehicles, was reported at 1:51 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 85/87 and Plaza Boulevard.

Police say a Dodge Ram driven by Andrew Marsh, 45, of Colorado Springs, slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Impala, which was then pushed into the back of a Toyota Tundra. Both the Impala and the Tundra were stopped for a red light.

There were six people in the Impala. Two adults in the front seat and four children in the back seat.

The driver of the Impala has been identified as Daniela Gray-Maldonado, 24, of Colorado Springs. Her front-seat passenger was Regina Steckler, 35, from Calhan. Both women suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The four children riding in the backseat included a 15-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and a five-week-old girl.

The 12-year-old boy died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the crash.

The five-week-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries as well. She is reportedly in critical but stable condition.

The other two children suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The driver of the Toyota, 35-year-old Daniel Anthony of Fountain, suffered minor injuries in the crash, as did Marsh.

A total of eight people were taken to the hospital as a result of the crash. The most seriously injured patients were airlifted.

Highway 85/87 was closed at Plaza Boulevard. It reopened just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Colorado State Patrol says it is investigating whether drugs and/or alcohol may have contributed to the crash.
